£5,000 donation for youth centre
Volunteers with equipment donated by Wickes before the refurbishment started
A project to refurbish a youth centre and make it more widely used could receive a boost thanks to a local councillor.
Teenagers who use Keystone Escape Youth Centre in Rockingham Road, Kettering, are giving the building a facelift to make it more environmentally friendly and ensure it can be open more often.
And Matt Lynch, county councillor for the St Andrew’s and St Peter’s ward, has approval from Northamptonshire County Council to donate £5,000 to the project from his empowering councillors fund.
Trustee Dave Lane, who is heading the Fit for the Future project, said: “It’s great to have the funding from Matt Lynch for a project like this.
“For him to come along and make this generous donation has been a real boost.
“One of the things that is important for us is to get the boys’ toilet done before we re-open and also having the building fitted with a new lighting system – this money goes a very long way towards that.”
The centre’s Youth Forum secured £19,000 of funding from Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (Wren) and is also installing loft, underfloor and wall insulation, rear windows, a heating system and a ventilation system.
Cllr Lynch’s donation will also go towards repairs to the large skate ramp so it can be re-opened to centre users.
Before the refurbishment began in November the centre was only used three nights a week, but trustees want to increase opening times to four or five days and nights a week.
They want theatre groups, art groups, dance groups and music groups to use the centre at times when there is no youth club meeting.
Mr Lane added: “The project is going well, the Wren funding is coming through and the lighting will be done in the next week or two.
“After that the loft insulation will be put in and the toilets will be done – in the next four to six weeks there will be a lot of important work being done.”

Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 09:21 AMIs there a reason why County Councillor Matt Lynch declares his contact address to the electorate of St Andrew's and St Peter's as co the Conservative Group Office at County Hall and not the home address in Northampton listed on the Northampton Borough Council website? Councillor Lynch is both a borough councillor in the town where he lives (Northampton) and a county councillor for part of Kettering. Nothing wrong with that - unless withholding his home true address details from Kettering electors is because Councillor Lynch believes they would not elect him if they knew he doesn't live in the town.
