Experts have answer to growing problems

Nearly 100 people attended the Evening Telegraph Gardeners' Question Time held with BBC Northampton on Monday at Kettering Park Hotel & Spa.

A panel of garden experts, fielded the questions from the audience, a combination of members and non-members of the Evening Telegraph Gardeners' Club.

Chairing the panel was BBC Northampton gardening expert Johnnie Amos.

He was joined by author and TV presenter Ursula Buchan, Cottesbrooke Hall head gardener Phylip Statner, arboriculturalist Becky Peace and Evening Telegraph gardening columnist Nicholas Warliker.

Mr Amos said: "It was a good, healthy turnout and there was a lot of scribbling going on with people making copious notes. There was a lot of information being taken in.

"It was also conducted in an informal atmosphere so people were also talking with each other and exchanging ideas."

Mr Warliker said: "I always say an event like this is only as good as the people it attracts, and the people who were there were genuinely interested in gardening.

"With around 100 people there it showed the power of gardening."

Liz Wilson, of Churchill Way, Kettering, did not take a question along with her but ventured one on the night.

She said: "I enjoyed it immensely, not least because I felt it was a distinguished panel who would be able to answer my question with some authority.

"I asked for some suggestions as to what trees would be suitable for a small garden and came away with some idea.

"It was an evening well spent."

Laurel Harding, of Wymington, said: "I submitted a question related to yew trees and got answers from all four panellists.

"The evening was excellent and I went home with a lot of literature. I'd certainly go to another one."
