Romance is in the air at a county park where young couples have been falling in love for the past 90 years.

Wicksteed Park in Kettering has set the scene for many a love story since opening in May 1921 and the search is on for the most romantic.

Bosses are asking couples to send in their memories as part of a project to collect stories about the park – and the most romantic will win a meal for two at Wicksteed’s Park View Bistro.

Joyce and Roland Lack, of Rydalside, Kettering, first met on the park’s boating lake in 1949, and celebrated 60 years of marriage in July.

Mrs Lack said: “It was a lovely place to meet each other and we have happy memories of our time there.

“We still often walk up to the park but it’s changed a lot over the years.”

The couple were out rowing with separate groups of friends but ended up splashing water at each other and the rest, as they say, is history.

The park’s managing director, John Roberts, said: “Wherever I go someone always says ‘Oh, Wicksteed Park’ and begins to tell me about their memories of being there.

“The thousands of people who come to our shows each year also tell staff about how they met their husband or wife or fell in love during visits.

“We now want to record and preserve the many wonderful stories which people have so they are not lost forever.”

Anybody who wants to share romantic memories and be in with a chance of winning the meal for two can contact the park. Stories can be sent by emailing romance@wicksteedpark.co.uk or writing to Romance, Wicksteed Park, Barton Road, Kettering, Northamptonshire, NN15 6NJ.
