The family of a man who died after being hit with a single punch outside a Wellingborough nightclub met schoolchildren yesterday to talk to them about the tragedy.

Stuart Martin, 28, died after he was hit in the back of the head outside Bar Life nightclub in Wellingborough on June 19, 2010.

His fiancee Katie Harthen and mother Joyce Martin spoke about the tragedy for a DVD aimed at warning others about the potential consequences of low-level violence.

That DVD was shown to pupils when Katie and Joyce visited Huxlow Science College in Irthlingborough yesterday to launch the County Schools Challenge there.

Joyce also gave a talk during assembly and the pair answered pupils’ questions about Stuart and what had happened.

Youngsters who take part in the County Schools Challenge are being invited to come up with a business solution to the problem of low-level violence.

Katie said she was impressed with the youngsters’ ideas. She said: “I was really, really pleased and quite surprised at how quickly they were cracking on with it. Everyone was really enthusiastic.”

Joyce said the pupils had asked her about what happened. She said: “They were interested in the start of it all, how it happened and how the police told me.”

Year 8 pupils spent all day yesterday working on their ideas and an overall winner was chosen at the end of the day to go on and represent the school at the finals in July.

Youngsters said they had taken a lot from the DVD and the visit.

Pupil Saskia Powell said: “It was a good assembly. It was quite shocking and sad.”

Pupil Chloe Warboys said: “It was upsetting when we first saw the video, you wouldn’t believe people could do that.”
