Roses are red, violets are blue, it does not matter how much I spend on perfume for you.

An Evening Telegraph survey has found the cheapest perfume on the High Street is more popular than products priced 72 times their amount.

We sprayed five men and women with a £72.50 bottle of Eau du Soir, a £67 bottle of Alien by Thierry Mugler and 99p bottle of Flowers of Love.

And three out of the five said they preferred the cheaper fragrance – much to their surprise when we revealed which one they picked.

Not one of the five picked the most expensive perfume as their favourite, two even said it was the least favourite.

The 99p bottle came from discount store 99p Stores in Newlands Shopping Centre in Kettering.

The Northamptonshire-based business has jumped on the Valentine’s Day bandwagon and is also introducing a 99p freshly cut rose to its product line.

Owner Hussein Lalani said: “We tested the perfumes extensively with out own staff and they all passed the test with flying colours.

“It really doesn’t come as a surprise to me that people prefer ours to more expensively priced fragrances.

“You really don’t have to pay the Earth to get what you want.”

When asked what he was getting his fiance for the special day, Mr Lalani admitted his partner was not getting hundreds of pounds spent on her.

He said: “After your survey I think I will definitely be buying the 99p fragrance for her.

“For the cost of a cup of coffee you can buy fragrance and roses – it’s a real deal and just shows love doesn’t have to cost of money.”

The chain has 175 UK and Ireland stores.
