Postman Jim Parry got dressed up to do his rounds and deliver the message about an appeal to raise £450,000 for life-saving treatment for five-year-old Niamh Curry.

Mr Parry, of Brooke Close, Wellingborough, was the Curry family’s postman for years and wanted to do something to help boost their appeal to raise the cash to pay for treatment for Niamh’s aggressive neuroblastoma cancer.

So he decided to spread the word about the appeal and collect cash while doing his rounds in Wellingborough on Saturday.

Leaflets were posted to residents in advance to tell them Mr Parry would be calling.

He did the weekend round dressed up as a postbox with his girlfriend Karen Day, who collected donations in a bucket as they went.

The pair’s route covered 500 homes. They started in Muirfield Road and visited Barnwell Road, covering all the closes from Grafton Close to Holcot Close, before visiting Troon Crescent and Lyle Court, the Curry family’s area.

Mr Parry said: “We collected more than £1,000, which was amazing. Everyone was really generous and we can’t thank them enough.

“I was the Currys’ postman until about 18 months ago, they were on my delivery route for about five or six years. I used to speak to them quite often, I can remember when little Niamh was born.

“I was quite shocked when I heard about the appeal on Facebook, I saw it and thought ‘I know these people’ so I sprung into action.”

Mr Parry said he hoped to encourage some of his colleagues to help raise funds for Niamh. He said: “I’m hoping now I’ve done this I can encourage other postmen and ladies to do something similar on their deliveries.”

The Niamh’s Next Step appeal has raised more than £80,000.
