Nominate your hero to carry iconic flame

Shoppers are being asked to nominate their local heroes to give them a chance to carry the Paralympic Flame to open the Games this summer.

Sainsbury’s in Burton Latimer is taking part in a nationwide scheme by the supermarket chain in which customers are asked to nominate an inspirational person or team to carry the iconic flame.

There are 100 places up for grabs nationwide for people to carry the flame on a 24-hour relay from Stoke Mandeville to the Olympic Park in Stratford, London, where the torch will be used to officially open the Paralympic Games.

The store’s manager, Richard Higson, said: “It would be such a fantastic opportunity if one of our customers got the chance to carry the flame en route to London.

“It is also a great opportunity for our customers in Burton Latimer to get involved in the build-up to the Paralympic Games.

“Carrying the flame and helping launch this year’s games really would be a great honour for an individual or team from Burton Latimer.

“We’re looking for nominations for people who have really made a difference by inspiring those around them.

“It’s quick and easy to nominate, and we’ve got a stand in the store that has already generated a lot of interest.”

The campaign is running until Tuesday, February 14, and people can pick up an information leaflet in store.

The relay will take place during the Paralympic Games’ opening week on August 28 and 29.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, said: “All around the UK there are teams or individuals that embody the Paralympic values and make a difference to the lives of others.

“The London 2012 Paralympic Torch relay aims to recognise the contribution of some of these amazing people.

“If there is a team or individual in Burton Latimer that you feel deserves recognition for their contribution, then I would encourage you to nominate them.”
