Rothwell Trinity Church organ story: Organist Norman Austin, 25/02/12

Town residents have started fundraising to repair a century-old organ at a church in Rothwell.

A concert at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday will mark the start of the campaign to raise £10,000 towards the work.

The total cost of the repair will be £120,000 but this has largely been covered by a legacy of £100,000 left to the church.

A further £10,000 will come out of the church bank reserve.

The organ was built in 1897 by Wordsworth of Leeds.

The work will not only see the organ fully repaired, but it will see it moved closer to the church congregation.

Organist Norman Austin described the organ as beautiful.

He said: “There are not many like it around today – it has real historic significance.

“Many organs are now fully electric and lose their character.

“This one, though, is a real gem to play.

“It just needs repair work to improve the sound and we want to move it too.”

The concert on Saturday will be an organ recital by the director of music at Peterborough Cathedral, Andrew Reid.

There is no entry price fixed and people are asked to donate what they feel appropriate to the organ fund.

As well as the music there will also be wine and cheese served.

Mr Austin said: “We know this event won’t raise the £10,000 needed but we hope it will kick-start the appeal and get interest going.

“I’m sure further fundraising events will be held as part of the campaign this year.

“Any bit of help we get will be much appreciated.”

The next fundraising event will be an organ marathon from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, March 3.

Sponsorship forms for that are available at the church.

Anyone wanting to donate to the appeal can contact the Rev John Westwood at the church vicarage.
