About 200 ex-battery hens which were saved from being slaughtered are in need of new homes.

The birds have been rescued from a battery farm near Ipswich by Brook Farm Animal Sanctuary in Raunds and its volunteers are now trying to find new homes for them.

Charity spokesman Susannah Ellis said: “All the birds are 18 months old which is the age they are slaughtered at if they are battery hens because their ability to produce eggs goes down, although they can still lay eggs.

“We’ve got as many here was we can manage and we’re looking for people to adopt them as pets and keep them for the rest of their natural lives.

“We need to re-home them in a minimum of pairs because they are sociable.”

The birds need a fixed coop where they can be safely shut in at night, a run and space to scratch around in. They can be fed chicken feed, fresh water and scraps.

The charity will offer help to new owners if they encounter problems.
