Masterchef Corby: Tresham College's Masterchef cook off to mark National Apprentice Day. Five staff members teamed up with five apprentices and students to produce a three course meal Thursday 9th February 2012

Apprentices were able to share their skills at a Masterchef style contest.

Tresham College apprentices teamed up with staff at the Manor House Restaurant on its Corby campus to demonstrate their culinary skills and to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week.

Guests were able to enjoy the creations of the apprentices, who had their menus chosen by the member of staff they teamed up with.

Deputy leader of Corby Council Cllr Mark Pengelly, Des Barber of Corby Radio, Martin Borley from BBC Radio Northampton and Hannah Williams from the Evening Telegraph joined the college’s recently appointed principal Stuart Wesselby to judge the creations.

The overall winners of the contest on Thursday were Allison Hope, who is responsible for employer and adult skills at the college, with Devon Johnson, an apprentice who works at the Aviator Hotel in Sywell.

They beat off the competition with a menu of roasted aubergine with yoghurt and pomegranate dressing followed by pan grilled salmon with a red pepper salsa and finally Eton mess.

Mr Johnson, 41, who swapped life as a graphic designer for his new career, said: “As a single dad I fell behind with the latest programmes and when it came to looking for another job I found a lot of university graduates had all the qualifications.

“Instead I thought about the fact I had been cooking for my girls for years and that motivated me to go in to this side of things.”

Mr Wesselby said: “It’s great to combine developing in a community role and learning the skills of being a chef at college. Hopefully they will have been able to teach our staff a few things.”
