A town centre has been dealt another blow as another shop has closed.
Crystal Clear, a company which also had a shop in Northampton, has shut its base in High Street, Kettering, joining a long list of shops which have left the town centre.

The problem has become increasingly worse in the last two years, during which
time Johnsons Cleaners, The Brampton Pie Company, Stationery Box, perfume shop L'Aura and family business J W Stirling and Son have all left the town.

Paul Lawson, of Crystal Clear, said: "It was heartbreaking to leave – it was our shop and we built it from scratch.

"In the centre of Kettering it's just bare. You look up and down the High Street and so many units are empty. Everyone is struggling and it gets to the point where it's not financially viable.

"You look at what's happening in Corby and Wellingborough then you look at Kettering. People are leaving the town in droves.

"We ran the shop for about six years but it gets to the point where people come into the town, pay to park for an hour and just get what they need, they don't wander around.

"The days of browsing are gone. I think more and more of the small companies will leave and Kettering will be left with pound shops, coffee shops and big retailers."

Jim Hakewill, leader of Kettering Council, said: "There are no short-term cures. Our best choice is to seek some major names attracted to the town."

On Thursday, the Evening Telegraph said Kettering Chamber of Trade offered every town trader a free 18-month membership to rally support to help fight competition from Corby and Wellingborough.

Jim Hakewill states there is no short term cure for shops closeing, then why dont you get the rents & rates reduced, and while your at it try reduceing the parking fee`s.Its no wonder people are going out of town to shop. Now in desperation the chamber of trade are now offering town traders 18-months free membership, try reduceing their rent/rates then they may be able to pay to be members. It looks like kettering has lost the battle with corby & wellingborough,i wonder how many members of this conserative council actually shop in kettering. When all the shops in the town centre close down, would it be possible to turn it into a play area like wicksteed park.

Jim Hakewil should resign! Its really sad to think that our local councillors only solution is to try and get a big name shop to come to a local town.

Just remember the way the Conservative KBC has allowed the town centre to decline the next time a Tory councillor is up for re-election.

So what would a Labour council do about it?

Three things need to be changed in my opinion:
1. From the Ise Lodge to Town Centre on a Saturday its quicker for me to travel to Wellinborough or Corby, even after the millions wasted on the new lights, the time it takes to drive into the Town Centre doesn't seem to have changed?

2. Charges to use the car parks need to be changed to entice people to spend longer in the town.

3. Mr Hakewell suggests 'Our best choice is to seek some major names attracted to the town'. Its common knowledge there are no premises big enough in the Centre for major names so how is that going to happen?!

I agree with Mark T , the sooner Jim Hakewill resigns the better, and let someone take over who has got the interest in the people of kettering and its town centre. The only thing this conservative council is interested in is Themselves. It would be no good having a Labour council,as Labour have proved they are incapable of running the country.

Why do you think the planners made sure Kettering had the best By-Pass infrastructure in the area ???

Cos they knew everyone would want to miss the dump !!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHA Bring it on Corby.

Ignorance is Bliss !! It also goes with arrogance and that is Kettering is stuck in a time warp !! For years the Kettering has been smug " Because we have Marks & Spencers" " We will take the good wages from British Steel, but damn sure I wouldnt live in Corby" Well its time for us laugh

When all else fails - Corby people will always have to got to Kettering for Hospital treatment.

It is in the interests of Corby for Kettering to be successfull.

Corby knows what neglect is, why gloat and wish it on our neighbours?

Corby and Kettering should be in partnership to ensure the two towns have the best facilities, best road systems, best of everything to serve our partenership communities.

We are stronger together - it is the only way to prise the cash from the greedy clenched fist of Gordon Brown's tax mad government.
