A building fund has been set up to help pay for an extension to a popular community centre.
In March, the Counties Community Association was given planning permission to extend the Counties Community Centre, in Hertford Road, Kettering.

The group has already raised £15,000 towards the project and Kettering Council is committed to providi
ng a further £15,000 to the scheme.

But the association is planning a series of fundraising events this year as it thinks even more money will be needed.

The building work may be done in stages, depending on what funds are available, so the association is keen to get the ball rolling.

It will see the creation of a new community room and much-needed storage space for groups which use the centre, including an art class, a line dancing group, bowls group, bingo and Kinder Music.

Association secretary Davina Smith said: "At this stage we're not sure what the overall cost will be because we are still waiting for some quotes.

"We have been fundraising for a number of years for this and have been banking all the money we raise after we have paid our overheads.

"We are very lucky because the hall is very well used and we do get monthly money coming in because we have a good mainstay of activities that go on."

Mrs Smith said she was unsure when the work would start but urged people to support their fundraising events.

She said: "You start off with an amount which you think it will cost but it soon escalates and it will probably be a bigger project than £30,000."

She said they would be looking at other funding avenues, such as grants.

Forthcoming fundraising events include a beetle drive in June, a table-top sale in July and a fashion show in November.

A sponsored dance which was due to take place at the centre on May 28 has been postponed.

In March, the group urged more residents living in the Hertford Road area to use the centre.
