The works are part of a bike track which is currently being built along Pytchley Road in Kettering to encourage people to cycle to the shops at the industrial estate at the bottom of the road.
The project is partly being funded by Tesco and Northa
mptonshire County Council as part of the project to get more people on their bikes.
As part of the track the road has been widened, forcing trees to be removed.
However residents along the road have said they were not informed about the project and have raised safety fears.
Ian Steele, of Pytchley Road said: "This is going to be very dangerous when it is complete as cyclists will have to go from a track to a narrow part of road over a bridge.
"There has been no consultation and there are lots of people who don't know what's going on."
Ann Sutton of Blenheim Way, Kettering, said: "In addition to the loss of the trees and shrubs which will obviously affect the aesthetic appearance of the whole area, the noise levels of the traffic on this very busy road will be greatly increased, causing even greater distress to the Venture Park residents.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: "We are aware of the health and environmental benefits of using travel alternatives to the car, such as walking or cycling, and are working to take all possible measures to reduce the problems of traffic congestion in the county."
