Curtis Woodhouse wants his end his football career as a Wembley winner by guiding Rushden & Diamonds to promotion.
The team captain kicks off his final campaign with today's Blue Square Premier opener at Eastbourne Borough before concentrating on professional boxing next year.

And while Diamonds are aiming to challenge for the championship, Woodhouse would settle for play-off glory.

He said: "I was speaking to my missus this week and we agreed it would be great if Diamonds went up through the play-offs so my last game is at Wembley with our little boy watching.

"I feel that I owe the club a little bit for helping out with my boxing and allowing me to train. By getting promoted I think we'll be quits!"

Woodhouse has dropped down the divisions since playing for Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Peterborough United.

But he revealed: "This is my 11th season now and I still get excited by the first game.

"You've done all the hard work and everyone is chomping at the bit to find out who is going to play.

"Looking at our squad, there's competition for places so the manager has got a tough decision to make.

"We're going down there today expecting to come back with three points. But we know we won't win every game.

"This season is going to be harder than last year because Wrexham will probably be up there with the usual suspects like Torquay United.

"There are maybe six to eight teams who fancy themselves to get
promoted. We would put ourselves in that bracket as well.

"Our home record last season was very poor as too many teams came onto our pitch and turned us over.

"Hopefully we can improve on that and get our fans right behind us, starting on Tuesday night against Ebbsfleet United."
