Shaun Harrad pulled one back only for debutant Manny Panther and Michael Simpson to both see red.
It was a dull start to the game, however.
Indeed, it was 20 minutes before the first shot on target was seen.
Former Diamond Greg Pearson – who was constantly barracked by the home fans – turned Chris Hope and ran through on goal only for Curtis Osano to get back and cover well.
Good work by Lee Tomlin – along with some impressive persistence – earned him a shot that was blocked by Kevin Poole. The rebound was blasted over the bar by Clare – much to the delight of the Burton fans behind the goal.
He had a fairly swift response, however.
Just before half-time Panther was fouled on the edge of the area and, after Burgess had run over the ball, Clare then clipped the ball over the wall and into the top corner of the net. And that came when Andy Corbett and Pearson combined for the former to have a shot on goal but his effort was comfortable for Alan Marriott.
Nigel Clough made a double change at the break switching his strikeforce around and it very nearly paid instant dividends as Harrad earned a corner. The kick was then headed against the bar by Jake Buxton but bounced clear.
The visitors were certainly the dominant force now. They upped the tempo and had the bulk of possession and territory.
But it was another bit of class that doubled Diamonds' advantage. Tomlin's snapshot hit a team-mate but the rebound went to Wolleaston who, from 25 yards, hit a controlled volley along the ground and into the bottom corner of the net.
The two-goal gap lasted just three minutes, though. Diamonds failed to clear a corner and the ball struck Sagi Burton's hand in the area. Substitute Harrad thumped the penalty straight and hard into the net.
Then both teams had a man sent off. Michael Simpson committed an ugly challenge on Panther who reacted. Neither probably deserved a red card but that did not stop referee Jock Waugh from showing them the exit.
Harrad continued to look lively and it needed Osano and substitute Jake Beecroft to deny him on separate occasions.
And Burton continued to push. They threw their centre-halves up front in desperate attempt to claw something from the game.
And they nearly managed it. Jody Banim hooked the ball goalwards but Alan Marriott reacted well to tip the ball behind and see the game to a conclusion.
