Guy Branston sees no reason why Kettering Town can't come out of their tough bank holiday weekend with a good return of points.
Two games in the space of three days brings the Poppies up against fierce local rivals Rushden & Diamonds and early pacesetters Cambridge United.

Both opponents are expected to challenge for promotion in the Blue Square Premier while consolidation is Kettering's main aim.

But that is not the sort of talk Branston, who has captained the team in their first three matches, wants to hear as he firmly believes the Poppies have the capability to shock a few people this season.

"I really think we can kick on this season instead of having the talk of being happy with 14th place in the league," he said.

"There's no reason why we can't beat sides like Rushden or Cambridge. If 11 of our players do their jobs then we can beat anyone.

"To be back playing Rushden, Cambridge, Oxford and York is just like being back in the League.

"There are some big games against some great clubs and it should only be embraced and enjoyed by all of us.

"And if you are enjoying your football I believe you go and play better anyway.

"So we have to play against these sides and enjoy it. If we do there is no reason why we can't get good results against them.

"I believe we can get a good return this weekend.

"There shouldn't be any doom and gloom about us being relegation fodder and I can't work out why some people are thinking that way."

Branston, meanwhile, was delighted to be handed the armband for the first three matches as the Poppies collected three successive draws.

"I have enjoyed being the captain," he added.

"I always like to have my say on things and the gaffer asks for my opinion on certain things.

"But the dressing-room is good here. We all stick together and we all go out together and try to have as much fun as we can.

"But when it comes to training it needs a few people saying things.
"I may be the man with the armband but we have a number of leaders here."

Poppies team: Harper, Eaden, Jaszczun, Wrack, Branston, Potter, Solkhon, Beardsley, Boucard, Seddon, Geohaghon.

Diamonds team: Marriott, Osano, Jelleyman, Hope, Woodhouse, Phillips, Burgess, Rankine, Tomlin, Burton, Corcoran.
