We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura.
Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
History of Reiki Reiki, originating from the words raku-kei, is the art and science of spiritual self improvement. Reiki originated in ancient Tibet thousands of years ago. The Reiki calligraphy, in Sanskrit, was used in meditation in Tibetan monasteries. Reiki symbols were painted upon large wall hangings in the monasteries and acted as a the centre focus in the practices toward enlightenment by the Tibetan holy men.
What is now called Reiki was re-discovered in the 1870's by Dr. Mikao Usui. As the story goes, Dr. Usui, the president of a small Christian University in Japan, was asked by his student "How did Christ heal?"
This question led Dr. Usui to resign from his University position and begin a ten year search for the answer. His quest led him to many parts of the world to study in many different languages, and finally to original Sanskrit Buddhist sutras where he found ancient symbols that he believed to be the formula for healing.
As this point, Dr. Usui felt he had the keys to healing, but did not know how to awaken his healing power. He decided to go to a mountain and meditate for 21 days, to seek the power to heal. On the final day, Dr. Usui saw a beam of light rushing towards him. The light struck him in the middle of his forehead, and at that moment he saw the Reiki symbols and felt them enter his mind and memory. Dr. Usui spent the rest of his life sharing Reiki. Before his death, Dr. Usui passed the keys of Reiki over to his closest associate, Dr. Chijiro Hayashi, who ran a Reiki clinic in the early 1900's in Japan.
Reiki was brought to Hawaii in 1934 by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who was born on the island of Hawaii in 1900 and lived in the Hawaiian islands until 1970. In her mid-thirties, Mrs. Takata became widowed and very ill, and travelled to Japan to seek treatment. While there she was guided to Dr. Hayashi's clinic and healed with Reiki. She studied Reiki for a year in Japan and later was made a Reiki Master (one who can fine tune or empower others with Reiki energy). Mrs. Takata spent the rest of her life sharing Reiki, and in 1970 she moved to California and began to train other Masters.
Until recently, Reiki training followed an oral tradition. Very little was written about Reiki, and much of Mrs. Takata's teachings have come from her diaries and taped interviews.
Reiki in the West After coming to the west, the Usui System of Natural Healing has evolved over time. In its current state, it is much more organized and structured than the simple, flexible, intuitive method practised by Dr. Usui. The following is a description of the evolution of the Usui System of Reiki.
During his mystical experience on Mt. Kurama, Dr. Usui received the ability to do Reiki treatments, the Reiki symbols and the ability to pass Reiki on to others. Later he added the Reiki Ideals and the idea that one needs to receive compensation for a treatment. Dr. Hayashi added the standard hand positions, the three degrees and their attunement processes. Mrs. Takata added the fee structure previously mentioned. The required waiting periods between classes were added by several of Mrs. Takata Masters after she passed on.
After Mrs. Takata transition, a few teachers began making changes in the way they taught Reiki. Most of the changes were beneficial, and included the addition of knowledge and healing skills the teachers had learned from other systems or had acquired from inner guidance. In this way, many varieties of Reiki have developed.
We support all Reiki schools which adhere to the original spirit of Reiki.
What happens during a Reiki Session? The session begins with a discussion of a bit of the life history of the client. This assists the practitioner in determining the direction the healing session may take. The client is asked some basic health and treatment information to find any contraindications to Reiki. The practitioner then asks the client for any goals he or she may have for the session.
Next, the client is encouraged to get comfortable by loosening clothing or removing shoes and jewellery. The client lies first on his or her back on a Reiki table fully-clothed. The practitioner places his hands lightly on or just above the body, usually starting at the head and working down towards the feet. The session is usually conducted with relaxing music and also may incorporate additional healing sounds, if desired by the client.
Once the energy is flowing smoothly at the front of the body, the client usually is encouraged to roll over and the healing continues on the back.
The client is encouraged to breathe deeply and relax and often feels a sense of flowing heat, coolness or tingling.
Who is most likely to benefit from Reiki healing?People who need to relax and get more balanced.
People who wish to use Reiki to assist them in their current course of medical or psychological treatment.
People open to complementary or alternative therapies.
People who are working on developing their own wellness and not looking for a "magic pill" to do the work for them.
How does the Reiki energy work to provide healing? The client's "Inner Healer" or immune system draws the energy into the energy field or aura. This helps to eliminate energetic "blockages" that are often one source of pain. With the clearing of these blockages, the client's full energy can be used for achieving homoeostasis or balance.
Please note that Reiki is not a "cure" for a particular medical or psychological problem. The session simply gives an energy to support the client in his or her own healing. We do not diagnose conditions or provide medical or psychological treatment.
Many clients report that they feel more relaxed and balanced after a session, while also feeling a greater sense of energy and well-being.
Does my belief in Reiki (or my scepticism) create a placebo effect that does the healing? One of the best ways to convince a septic of this type of healing is to give a brief session and let him or her judge for him or herself.
Belief has little to do with the success or failure of a treatment, however, the client must be willing to accept the energy that is provided.
Practitioners only provide energy to those wishing to receive it. We do not "decide" for a potential client whether or not the energy is needed. The client is in control of the session at all times.
