In 2002, my Son Craig and myself had a chance to go to Florida to join the Cherokee in their Fall Pow-wow.
We flew out to Newark changed planes and then onto Jacksonville Florida where we where met by a man that looked like any other American gentleman.

He greeted us and introduced himself as Grey Squirrel, we climbed into his 4x4 with our cases and off we went.

We must have travelled hours, and finally pulled into a track leading into a large swamp area and a sign saying 'Welcome to the Okeefenokee swamp'.

Then we came to a clearing with tents and tee-pees (wig-wams) up- there were hundreds of them.

As we climbed out of the 4x4 we were met by hundreds of Cherokee women giving that shrill noise they make.

Craig my son who was only 14 then looked on in amazement and they all approached us and made us feel welcome.

We were shown to a tent and this was home for the six week duration we where there.

I then had very long hair, nearly down to my bum, and many due to my black hair and not so pale looks, took me for a Cherokee, until I spoke, that really freaked them out.

Craig seemed to get on well with all the Native American teenage boys and girls.

During our stay there we took part in many ceremonies, I was really proud when they had a veterans parade for the Cherokee who had fallen in all the past battles and even those who had took part in World War two.

One of the Chiefs approached me one day and said someone had informed him that I had been in the British Army I said yes I had, he then asked me if I would be one of the many standard bearers that day in their parade.

On the day, they tied my hair back and I wore traditional Cherokee dress, I was wondering which battle honour I would carry for them, when from their museum on their camp, out came a Union Jack.

I was so proud walking into a huge arena with thousands of visiting civilian visitors and all the Cherokee watching as I carried the British standard into their parade.

I had been there about three weeks when a number of huge 4x4 vehicles arrived and this very tall man with a number of other men arrived, all Native Americans.

I was informed this was their Chief , at this point many of the Native American people had found out I was a Clairvoyant Medium and were all exited and amazed at the readings I had given.

That night I was sitting around a camp fire with many of the tribe when the Chief arrived he spoke to everyone individually and finally came to me, with him was the Medicine man and they sat with me, their Chief said " My medicine man here says you speak to the dead", I explained that to me they were not dead but as alive as us, he sat quietly as I explained how I perceived how the Spirit world was.

Later that night there was some kind of ceremony and the Medicine man called me forward he was boiling some kind of brew in a pot and slowly the huge drums began to beat, he said "Dancing Rain asked me to carry out this task for him".

I was taken aback, I had told no one that my Spirit Guide was a Pawnie Medicine man and named Dancing Rain.

Dancers took to the sacred dancing arena dressed in their Cherokee dress as they have done for thousands of years, all covered in feathers and wearing paint on their faces, as the drums beat there was a pot brewing over the fire which smelled weird, he finally took some of the brew in a metal bowl and said "This is harmless herbs but will help you" and offered it to my lips, slowly the drums came louder, I felt I was now in an ancient Native American camp, one of the men with him started to wipe white paint on my face and then he used some black paint over my eye's nose and around my mouth then everyone began to dance and shout, the drums where becoming louder, the screams and shouts where now blood curdling, the scene looked different the area was not the same, from all around me I could hear the call which is significant with the 'caw' crows make that build huge black nests in the top of tree's.

Then a face came in front of me, it was 'Dancing Rain' he said "When ever you need us at any time in the work the Great Spirit has for you and you need our help as in time to come you will, you will know we are near by the sound of the crow" at that point a bowl with black water was placed on the ground and I could see my reflection in it, as I stared my face looked like a skull with my white face and black around my eyes, mouth and nose, the Medicine man then whispered very close to my ear, " You are he who walks with the dead" .

Suddenly I was back at the camp fire with all the people there as before all smiling at me, I felt my face and could feel no paint at all, I looked at the sacred arena where they where dancing and it was all quiet, no drums, no dancers , the Medicine man said "Did you have a good vision quest" as he poked the huge logs on the fire I just nodded, remember this night.

All these years later there are many times in my work when I am in a home or place that has some nasty Paranormal activity going on and I send out a call for help, the first thing I hear is the loud rough 'caw' of crows around me, I have to smile, as my helpers have arrived.

The drums beat,
The rattles call,
The flames of fire grow tall.
Tis wisdom of the ancients
We do call.

The Dance and Sacred Song
Grow to a fevered pitch

Flames lick the night sky,
Hauntingly painted faces go by,
Sweat rolls down upon the desert ground.

Mystical answers are sought
From the stars which fill
The vastness of the dark sky.
What shall our path be
Oh, Spirit Guide?

To live in a world
Which only wishes us to die?
Our ways shall come back--
A terrible vengeance
Upon the Spirits that wish harm.

For now we wait,
Our Spirits in dormancy lie
Till the Ancient ones awaken
And hearken to the cry of the crow !!
