First what is a development circle?

Well in the World of Mediumship there are various development circles, for various types of Mediumship, people have different abilities and so require different teachers, it would be of no use someone learning to play a guitar going to a piano teacher. The people that find their way to a development circle will have had some experience in their life being Psychic, we are all Psychic in different degrees, some more than others, for instance when a person thinks of a film and it comes on television, when they think of a person they have not seen for a long time and suddenly they meet them or they receive a telephone call from them, when someone knocks on the front door and a certain person flashes through their mind and when they answer the door that person is standing there. When someone walks into a house and they sense the feeling of the house, when someome is relaxed, sitting with their mind still and they receive thoughts or images of situations and these situations come true. This then is just part of what having Psychic ability is about.

So people find their way to my development circle for many reasons, there are two types of development circles.

Mental Mediumship

Clairvoyance, perhaps the most known type of Mediumship, Clairvoyance in Latin is Clear seeing , this is when a Medium has the ability to see a Spirit person and this is broken down into two categories, Objective and subjective. Objective Clairvoyance is when a Medium sees Spirit like we see one another standing there, Subjective Clairvoyance is when you see Spirit in your mind's eye, think of a famous actor like Leonardo Decaprio, can you see him in your mind, then that is how a Medium sees Spirit Subjectivley.

The 'Chakra' System

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel, the chakras are energy vortices allowing energy to pass freely through the subtle bodies.
There are over 300 minor chakras throughout the subtle bodies. Seven of these are referred to as the main chakras, these are the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras. The 7 main chakras are joined at intervals along the spine on the etheric plane. I am only going to deal with the three, which assists me as a Medium. The other chakras are just as important and if you wish I will write a column especially dealing with all the seven main chakras if you contact me or the paper.
There is the Crown Chakra, is situated on top of your crown and this Chakra is where Spirit links with you, here is where information arrives

The third eye or brow Chakra is situated in the middle of your forehead, this Chakra is where a Medium 'sees' Spirit Clairvoyantly either Objectively or Subjectively.

The throat Chakra is where it states , where the throat is and this Chakra deals with Clairaudiance, hearing Spirit.

Clairaudiance, is Latin for Clear hearing, when a person hears sounds and voices from a Spirit person, again this can be broken down again as with Clairvoyance into two categories, Objective and Subjective. Objective Clairaudiance is when a Medium hears sounds as if the sound was in real time, like someone talking to you now, Subjective Clairaudiance is when it is in your mind, like remembering a conversation you had yesterday.

The Sacral Chakra is situated just below the belly button, or naval and this deals with Clairsentience.

Clairsentience, This is when the Medium feels certain sensations in their own body, this then will go onto develop into feeling the physical sensations of what the person passed away with or any physical problem they may have had during their life (leg missing, swollen feet, a stroke, etc.). The other way is by 'feeling' what the person looks like, whether they are male or female, who they are, where they are from, what they did.

PHYSICAL MEDIUMSHIP

Physical Mediumship usually takes more time and patience to practice. The conditions have to be right for spirit to appear in whatever form. The energy used by spirit is a lot greater in this form of communication than with mental Mediumship In most cases a medium goes into deep trance (there are different levels of trance) for the spirit to work through them. The spirit will use the mediums body, and I will stress here that the medium is not possessed by the spirit and should be in control at all times, the medium's spirit just steps to one side while the spirit uses part of their body to communicate. This can be through voice with the spirit using the vocal chords of the medium to "talk" to whoever is present, or to produce ectoplasm from various parts of the mediums body.

Materialisation can also occur where the spirit can be seen, and sometimes touched, by those present. This type of communication is very rare and should not be confused with ghosts or apparitions, as the spirit will use the energy built up in the room by those present to "appear".

I have talked about the conditions being right for physical Mediumship to happen, this means having in place safeguards in the form of other mediums to ensure that the session is controlled correctly and safely. Usually a group of people will gather at the same place, at the same time over a period of time, to build up the energies in the room and create the right atmosphere for whatever physical phenomena to happen. This can sometimes mean using a red light, apparently this creates a better atmosphere for spirit communication.
Here are some other types of physical Mediumship.

Transfiguration. Here the face of a spirit person can be seen on formed over the mediums face. The correct use of lighting is necessary as shadows can appear making people think they have seen someone that really isn't there. I have witnessed, and also been used as the medium for this phenomena. It made me jump at first to see faces appearing, because it wasn't just one face several appeared in succession. The faces can be very clear at times, with the mediums face completely disappearing.

Direct Voice. This sounds very strange, but objects called trumpets are used for this type of communication, they are conical shaped objects with holes at both ends. The trumpet is placed in the centre of the circle of people present, when the atmosphere is right for spirit they will make the trumpet float in the air and use it for communication. This sounds far fetched I know, but it does happen. The sound is created from an artificial throat box formed from ectoplasm and comes from the pointed end of the trumpet.

Trance. This form of Mediumship allows the spirit to control the the mediums body for communication. This could mean using not only the voice box but also moving various parts of the body. There are various stages of trance from slight over shadowing to full deep trance where the medium seems to be asleep. Whilst in trance the medium will be aware of spirit around them, and will communicate all that is told to them without interaction of their own thoughts. Deep trance is obviously better for this as the medium is not aware of what is being said by the spirit to those present. The medium should be in no danger if the session is correctly overseen and controlled.

Apports. An Apport is a physical object bought through by spirit usually to the group of people sitting for communication. I say usually because I have heard from other people of objects being bought through to individuals not necessarily communicating with spirit at the time. The objects can be almost anything from flowers, books, jewellery and even money usually coins (usually small denomination values, remember financial wealth is not important to spirit), I even read of an umbrella being deposited onto its owners lap which had been left outside of the room. People do not usually sit for the purpose of bringing apports through, they just happen during a séance or closed circle if the spirit wishes to do so for what ever reason.
Anyone wishing to practice this form of spirit communication should contact a spiritual church or group that is correctly organised to carry out such phenomena.

We have come a long way from the start of what is termed as the start of modern Spiritualism, which began in America.

March 31st, 1848 saw the beginnings of spiritualism in the parlour of the Fox home in Hydesville, New York. Kate and Margaret had been living with their parents in what was considered a haunted house. Raps and knocks were pretty much the extent of the activity.

The Fox sisters were a pair of women who, together, founded the modern Spiritualist movement in the United States, and opened the minds of thousands of people across the country. The effects of their endeavours can still be seen today in the way Spirituality has become a wisely accepted (not to mention widely practised) way of life. What began as a controversial phenomenon dubbed "The Hydesville Rappings", evolved into a following that advanced the philosophies and teachings of Spirituality and opened the door for many prominent Spiritualists of the time to begin openly advocating and practising their movement towards a more holistic state of being.
John and Margaret Fox were devout Methodists living in Hydesville, NY in 1848 when the first events took place. Their four adult children had long since moved away and started families of their own, leaving the youngest daughters Margaretta and Catherine (Maggie and Kate) in their small home. One night in March, the family was asleep when strange noises abruptly startled them awake. Reportedly, a variety of bangs, raps, and similar sounds kept the Fox family up that night, and every night for the rest of the week. They searched for, but could not find a source for the mysterious sounds. It was on March 31st, the date often recognized as the birth of Spiritualism, when Kate, the younger of the two girls, decided to try and figure out what was causing the rapping's She asked the noise to rap ten times. It did. Kate's questions became more complicated, querying as to the ages of the six Fox children, among other things, and each time the tapping responded perfectly.

Through a series of question and answer sessions with the source, Kate discovered that the noise was that of the spirit of a peddler who'd been murdered and buried in the basement of the Fox house some years past. The spiritual communication was given validity when human remains were reportedly unearthed beneath the floor of the small cottage. As word of the occurrences spread, the girls gained fame for their discovery of what would set off a veritable wildfire of Spiritualist activity.

E. E. Lewis made history when he visited the Fox house alongside many other people who had come to see for themselves what had caused such a commotion. After investigating the scene of the disturbance, Lewis wrote "A Report of the Mysterious Noises Heard in the House of Mr. John D. Fox"; the first acknowledged spiritualist publication ever.

In April 1848, news of the now locally famous "Hydesville Rappings" reached the ears of Leah Fox Fish, Maggie and Kate's older sister. Middle-aged Leah lived with her adolescent daughter in nearby Rochester, NY. Her husband had abandoned her and her daughter, so when Mrs. Fish saw the opportunity to capitalize on the fame of her younger sisters, she decided to seize it. Installing herself as the girls' manager of sorts, she led them around to performances of their talents in Mediumship at various séances and meetings in the area. The girls were a commercial success, and all three sisters profited from their exhibitions of spirit rapping's, also termed "Typtology."

P. T. Barnum brought the girls to New York City, where they impressed William Cullen Bryant, James Fenimore Cooper, George Ripley, Horace Greely, and others. Sceptics routinely charged them with fraud, however, no trickery was proved despite numerous tests. As knowledge of the girls spread further, so did the wave of spiritualism that was now sweeping across America. The success of the Fox sisters inspired others to discover their own mediumistic powers. Mediums appeared everywhere, and it soon became apparent that Spiritualism was more than a passing fad.

In 1852, Spiritualism was exported to Britain by a Boston medium, Mrs. Hayden. By 1855, Spiritualism claimed 2 million followers and appeared to be a new religion in the making. Spiritualists claimed that the immortality of the soul would at last be proved.

Many people heard of the girls' feat, and soon there were hundreds of imitators, both genuine and fabricated, who claimed that they, too, could communicate with the spirit world. Of these, many hoaxes were uncovered, but others were most likely real spirit communications, and it was in this way that the Spiritualist movement was spawned.
