Town's sporting stars pick up gongs

Olympic gymnast Daniel Keatings received the Outstanding Achievement Award at a ceremony last night to recognise Corby's sports stars.
The 18-year-old, who was a member of Team GB at the Beijing games, was also named Sports Performer of the Year at Corby Sports Awards.
Town mayor Peter McEwan said: "We Corby people are hoping that when you go to the Olympics in 2012 you will come back to the town with a gold medal. We wish you good luck in everything you do."
Daniel, who attended the ceremony at the Hotel Elizabeth in Corby with his family, said: "I am really happy because Corby is my home town. This is where I grew up. I feel I am doing this for the whole town and not just for me.
"I would like to say a big thank-you to everyone in Corby who has supported me , especially my family, friends and everyone who has given me financial assistance."
Hundreds attended the ceremony to watch Corby's sporting stars receive credit and encouragement. Those who received awards were:
Young Sports Person of the Year – Zak Crawford, 12, of Welland Valley Archers
Young Leader of the Year – jointly won by Laura Devenney, 16, and Sean Jackson, 17
Contribution to Sport – Paul Crowley, Weldon United Football Club
Team of the Year – Corby Netball League
Disabled Sports Person of the Year – awarded jointly to Sabrina Coe, 15 and Michelle Farquar, 18
Coach of the Year – Katie McKay, Corby Gymnastics Club
Champion School of the Year – 1 Woodnewton Primary School, 2 Danesholme Junior School, 3 Corby Old Village School
Primary School Recognition Award – Corey Bowden, St Brendan's Primary; Billy Frohmaier, Weldon Primary; Daniel Laing, Woodnewton Primary; Bradley Marshall, Brigstock Primary and Matthew Sidwell, Kingswood Primary.
