Young drinkers will be the target of a police and council crackdown over the school holidays.
Operation Stay Safe will return over the summer, after a successful run last year, where 63 under-aged people were caught drinking.

Corby Council wardens will be patrolling the streets with police officers every Friday and Saturday from 6pm until
midnight, and will take anyone they find drinking home to their parents.

Visits will also be carried out to homes of the children advising their parents of the situation and offering support on preventing under-age drinking.

Sgt Julie Mead of Northamptonshire Police said: "The main aim is to make sure our young people are safe and we are urging the community to make contact with us if they are experiencing anti-social behaviour in their local area.

"We are encouraging parents to take responsibility for the actions of their children by knowing where they are, what they are doing and who they are with at all times.

"There are lots of activities organised for young people in Corby over the holidays and residents can look on the Positive Activities Group website, www.corbypag.co.uk, to get an idea of what's available."

It is hoped this will help reduce the level of anti-social behaviour in Corby over the summer months, when reports traditionally increase.

Leader of Corby Council Cllr Pat Fawcett said: "I fully support this initiative and believe it is important that we educate our young people on the dangers of under-age drinking.

"We saw significant reductions in criminal damage and anti-social behaviour last summer when we ran the operation and we expect it again to be a success this year."

Patrols will be running across the town from Friday, July 30, to Saturday, August 28.

Adam Elkington, of Beanfield Avenue, Corby, said: "I think all teenagers are going to want to try drink, but if they are out in public drinking they should be stopped.

"This is true for adults though too, as they can cause just as much trouble if they are drinking in the street."

All guidance given through Operation Stay Safe will follow national Home Office guidelines.

If residents would like to pass on details of any hotspot areas for young people drinking or for more information about the crackdown they can call the Community Safety Team on 01536 464647.

This is not just a weekend problem it happens all week. The parents are the guilty one's it is their responsibility to know where their children are and what they are doing. You could say that by letting their children roam the streets and getting drunk amounts to neglect.
