Corby's largest employer is to scrap a free bus service for staff as part of a cost-cutting drive.
Staff at RS Components on the Weldon North Industrial estate have been using the service for 25 years to get to work at the huge complex three miles out of town.

The service runs across the entire town several times a day to coincide with shift changes for the 2,000 staff but now bosses have decided to scrap it to save £262,000 a year. The bus will pick up its last passengers on October 31.

One worker, who asked not to be named, said: "People are very angry about it. The bus is used by a lot of people and they rely on it.

"I understand why they are doing it. It is a lot of money to save."

Another employee said: "I don't think there is any alternative public
transport for most people.

"There will be some who can get lifts into work but I don't know if there's going to be room for people to park their cars.

"For me, it will mean a mixture of cadging lifts, walking or maybe buying a bike but I live at least four miles away so it's going to be tough.

"It used to be that working at RS was considered to be a job-for-life and the workers were really well looked after. It seems the company is moving away from that now."

RS has been making electrical components in the town for 25 years.

RS are a distribution firm, they don't make anything!

Correct Beanfeild Beast, its a catalouge company, sometimes I wonder who writes this paper!

There are a few things that bother me about this story, mainly the fact that it was front page 'news' but also that there was a pay freeze imposed in April and this was not reported at all.

RS could have consulted with staff and asked them if they were willing to pay for the service but they have not done this which is a shame as there will only be a few shift patterns in the warehouse now, could have easily been resolved without this problem.

On the other hand there are thousands of people in this town who manage to make it to work without a free bus so I dont understand why this is a problem, busses do run up to that industrial estate anyway.

I can understand employees being annoyed about it; especially having had the benefit of a free bus for so long; but in the current climate at least they still have a job to go. I bet there are a lot of people out there who wish they had a job and wouldn't mind if they had to walk/cycle/bus a few miles and be able to put food on their table and pay the rent/mortgage.

£262,000 on transport? No wonder they are stopping it.

It is a sad reality that all businesses are cutting costs in any way that they can these days! Any extras have been cut, there are no pay rises, cuts to bonuses, no long service recognition awards or bonuses!

So, I am not really surprised that the free bus service has gone too. At times there are as many as 3 buses leaving RS within an hour, sometimes with as few as 2 or 3 people on them. I can see why they have chosen to cut this service.

I work at RS (for now anyway)and i have had a few run ins with people in there over this topic.I agree with MrsG's comments. The trouble is that RS employees have been wrapped up in cotton wool for so long that they have become used to it and cannot adapt to change. If they feel disgruntled about losing this service then maybe they should spare a thought for those including myself that have been told they havent got a job and sort something out. They have until October to get something sorted. So stop moaning and sort something out.
