Planners have not found any reason to object to a radioactive waste site being located eight miles from a town.
Corby Council officers have told councillors there is no basis on planning grounds to oppose Augean Plc's proposed disposal of low-level radioactive waste at the East Northants Resource Management Facility, near King's Cliffe.

But the authority is
still set to tell Northamptonshire County Council it is against the plan following leader Cllr Pat Fawcett's comments that she does not want Corby to become "the highway to the dump".

A discussion on the issue will take place at the Corby Council development control committee meeting on Tuesday.

Head of planning Christopher Nunn said there would be no significant impact on Corby borough.

He said: "The radiation exposures to all persons, workers and members of the public, from these proposals will be below a small fraction of the legal limits and will be much less than the average exposure of a person to naturally occurring radiation.

"The site is an existing waste management facility. There is no proposed increase in the intensity of operation, just a change to the type of material being disposed. "

But he said the council had already raised concerns and is recommending that councillors object in their response to the county council's planning department.

Stuart Robertson, 37, of Beech Close, Corby, said: "If they can prove it's not harmful then you have got no argument.

"But if it is harmful then we don't want it there. With what happened at the steelworks with toxic waste and the ongoing court case, I think this will add to concerns."

The plan is strongly opposed by residents of King's Cliffe, who have set up a campaign group and petition.

Augean's technical director Gene Wilson argues the site will not be a threat to those living nearby as the amount of radioactive waste is small and there will be thorough safety precautions.

Not sure what the decision making procedure is and who has the ultimate say, but my concern is that if our council say no, and residents say no, will Northants County Council just force this through regardless ?

I wouldn't wish such a facility on anyone, would Gene Wilson or Augean like it buried next to his home if it's so safe ? I doubt it.

If the stuff is that safe then it should be ok to put it in a waste dump nearer the source instead of transporting it through Corby.

Meybe the local council at source would refuse permission

This has to be some sort of joke. Is this area the prime dumping ground of the UK?

I am an average person who doesn't know much about the 'safe' levels of radioactive waste. So how can they prove to me that it's not going to have short or LONG term effects, or harm to a persons health? Or do they hope that any effects of exposure as so far down the line that they are not linked to the waste?

"We'll worry about that when the time comes."

If Mr. Christopher Nunn wants to prove it's safe, then I'm sure there are ways. Perhaps he could have a lorry load passing by his house on a regular basis, or bury some in his back garden.

It's all good and well throwing around words like 'small fraction' and 'safe', but how do we know any level of radiation is safe? Prove it, show us the figures, the facts and diagrams, because if you expect us to believe you again after the diabolical way the current court case is being treated, then you've got another thing coming.

I am always amused by people getting all upset by the very mention of radioactive waste! then hopping on a plane and spending two weeks lounging by a pool exposing themselves to MASSIVE amounts of solar radiation.why do you think your skin goes brown, burns and then peels off and can become cancerous? this is similar to being anti mobile phone masts but wanting total mobile signal coverage in your area!with peoples confused attitude to what is a real risk to your heath its a wonder anybody drives a car!(the biggest cause of sudden unnatural or accidental death)

John,i think you will find the sun produces non-ironising radiation which is not as harmful to organs and living tissue as Ironising radiation. I would not want it near my home town either.

so PFT over exposure to solar radiation(sun bathing) is a smaller risk to the general population then? I am not in the least concerned about this site, anymore than I am concerned by having an xray or the possibility of Radon gas in my area or using a mobile phone or a microwave oven or crossing the street or putting my trousers on in the morning!!.(recorded as responsable for 14 deaths in this country alone last year) i would recommend you read the book "RISK" by Dan Gardner it will put your mind at rest about alot of these scare stories!
