Corby needs a second fire station to cope with the borough's growing population.
That is the recommendation of the North Northants Development Company, which has included the proposed £2.5m fire station in a list of services needed in the north of the county to cope with the expected population growth in the area.

The new fire station is likely to be built in the south of the town but is some years away from becoming reality.

A spokesman for the development company, which is responsible for the regeneration, said: "The only additional fire station needed will be in Corby. A second fire station located to the south of the town will be required to mitigate the impact of this growth."

But fire service manager Dawn Whittaker from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said a new station was only a possibility.

She said: "This has never been determined but there may be a second station needed. There definitely will be a requirement for additional provision.

"This may be the relocation of stations or it might be the relocation of new ones.

"Growth plans for capability are expected in 2015 but that's seven years away. In terms of a model we expect to have a definitive requirement by the end of next year."

The possibility of another fire station serving the south of the town has been welcomed by residents and community leaders.

Oakley Vale resident Phil Ewers said: "It would be very good to be able to cover this area. The town's current fire station is quite small.

Oakley Vale is growing quite nicely and everything is moving forward."
And Danesholme councillor Barry O'Brien said: "It would be an advantage to everyone in our community. It would be good if they could find a brownfield site around somewhere.

"But I wouldn't see it coming along very quickly. It seems to be something for the future."

I say this in all seriousness; wouldn't it be better to focus on catching and prosecuting the tiny-minded arsonists that seem to set fire to anything combustible?

The population may be growing, but is the amount of fires, kettering has only one fire staion and copes i would suggest if needed put a new station some were between kettering and corby so that they could respond to both towns if needed and also supply quicker response to inbetween villages like geddington etc.
