A great-grandfather has laid claim to being the oldest working club bouncer in Northamptonshire – at the age of 83.
Alex Williams, of Shetland Way, Corby, recently celebrated his diamond wedding anniversary but that doesn't stop him working as a doorman at the Rangers Supporters Club in Rockingham Road in the town.

The former steelworker regularly works the doors at the club to ensure there is no trouble and says it's a job he loves.

Mr Williams said: "I keep them in order. They are rough and ready but I have had no trouble and it's my ninth year. They are quite a good bunch.

"I can talk my way out of anything ."

The pensioner, who has two children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, became a bouncer several years ago through former work friends, and now he wants to see if he can break the mark set by Bob Dudley in Irchester earlier this month.

Mr Dudley, a former prisoner of war, retired as a bouncer at the age of 90 after working on the door of Irchester Working Men's Club for 25 years and now Mr Williams wants to emulate him.

He said: "I worked as a crane driver in the steelworks when I came out of the Navy.

"I started in 1948 and was there until they closed in 1980.

"I joined the club and one of my old pals was the doorman. He was retiring so they asked me if I would like to take it over.

"I started in 2000 and I still enjoy doing it. It's one of the loveliest little jobs I have had.

"If there's any trouble we have a panic button but I have only had to press it once. The club members are really well behaved.

"I saw there was an old boy who retired at the age of 90 so I want to see if I can break his record.

"I want to continue being a doorman."

The club's Maggie Goodall said: "He's very friendly and he looks after all the old ladies.

"He works on the door at the weekends and makes sure people are members and, if not, that they are signed in properly.

"He's very popular with the members."
