Hundreds of youngster put their talents on display at a glittering stage show in Corby.
Children who have taken part in the summer-long SHAPE scheme organised by Corby Council took part in the event yesterday afternoon at the Willows Arts Centre, in George Street, watched by proud parents and friends.

About 200 youngsters performed pieces, sang and danced to songs from High School Musical, Sugababes, Elvis, Mamma Mia! the Spice Girls and more than 20 other artists.

Big About Music supported the event that involved children aged between five and 13.

Corby Council Lead Member for Community John McGhee said: "The sessions have been going on for four weeks over the summer holiday and the talent show is a fantastic way for them to end their summer fun with us. We look forward to the show every year. It's great to see how much effort they put into their performances and how much enjoyment they get out of it.

"To all of the performers – break a leg."

SHAPE events have included sessions on arts and crafts, sport, drama and music on estates across Corby and in the surrounding villages.

Tom Dolan, 10, who attends Hazel Leys Primary School played a jazz piece on his alto-saxophone.

He said: "If I wasn't at SHAPE I would probably just be sitting around at home.

"I've done so many different things like dodgeball, football and art that I can't remember them all. I've been playing my saxophone for six months and I'm going to be playing a piece with some of the others as part of a jazz band."

Dance teacher Rachel Elliott from the Danesholme estate has been a leader in the scheme for three years. The 20-year-old said: "Doing the SHAPE scheme is fantastic fun. The kids are brilliant and we have such a good time.

"The leaders have decided to put on a very special performance of Mary Poppins for them today."
