Talks on future of housing for town
COUNCILLORS and business leaders have met to discuss the future of development in Wellingborough.
Wellingborough Council and Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce agreed to meet after the chamber criticised the council’s decision to limit the number of new homes being built.
Council leader Paul Bell and chamber president Alan Piggot met to talk about the issue on Thursday.
The debate began after the council set what it considered to be achievable targets for house building as it wanted to make sure that infrastructure such as roads and schools could be in place.
The chamber believed the targets should be higher to attract new businesses.
At the meeting several areas were discussed as possible sites for development.
Mr Piggot said: “We have no doubt that companies want to move into Wellingborough as Northamptonshire is a fast-growing county and a sought after area. We are not going to remain a small town and we need more houses, more schools and more jobs in order to grow.
“Demand will outstrip supply in the short term and the purpose of this meeting was to talk about releasing land to allow this necessary growth to go ahead.
“We are representing the views of businesses in Wellingborough and it’s only right that these issues were raised.”
Cllr Bell said: “This is obviously just an initial meeting but we all felt it was important to keep the relationship going and have agreed to meet every few months. We all have the same interest at heart – we want what’s best for Wellingborough.”

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 07:19 PMWe have had enough homes built in this area. If you really want to help this area then get on with regeneration the town centre. That includes Rushden as well. Lets face it the only reason we need so many homes is because of mass immigration. It is all about growth growth growth isnt it? How about focusing on quality instead of quantity? I for one deplore the notion of our countryside side being covered in concrete.
