Plans submitted for shopping park
PLANS for a £50m shopping park in Rushden which would create 1,500 jobs have been submitted to East Northamptonshire planning officials.
The proposed Rushden Lakes development for Skew Bridge includes plans for 20 new big name shops, including a large Marks & Spencer.
The planning application also seeks permission to build a home and garden centre, a drive-through restaurant, a gatehouse, a lakeside visitor centre, restaurants, a boat house and a lock.
The application also seeks outline permission to build a hotel, a crèche, a leisure cub and a marina.
LXB Retail Properties is also seeking planning permission to remove an existing ski slope, provide vehicle access, car and cycle parking and a bus stop.
LXB spokesman Gavin Stollar said: “We are delighted to have finally submitted our proposals for the Rushden Lakes scheme to East Northamptonshire Council.
“As we have said all along, Rushden Lakes has the potential to create new local jobs, provide a new high quality leisure and tourism destination whilst also complementing Rushden’s existing local retail offer.”
The planning application is expected to be heard by the council’s planning committee in June.
If it is given the go-ahead, building work could begin by the summer.
The project is expected to provide about 300 jobs during the construction phase, and a further 1,500 jobs once it’s fully open.
Joy Chapelle, of Hayway, Rushden, said: “I think it’s good news for the town. New jobs are always needed.”

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 04:43 PMI walk thru' Rushden High street most Saturdays. It seems there are more cars illegally parked than there are shoppers. So what has driven shoppers, (and retailers), out of Rushden? Out town developments like Tescos and Sainsburys? Plus Morrisons being built in Wellingboro'. Who defended OUR town centre then? The MP? No. Let it go ahead.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 07:48 PMThere will be huge resistance from the surrounding towns - the threat to their dying centres is increased by this development. The presumption is supposed to be opposed to out of town developments due to the damage previous similar developments have done. But this is corporate Britain - nothing for the small business, so I expect it will go ahead anyway.
