Pedestrianisation attracts new shop

Improvements to a haven for independent shops has resulted in a new children’s shoe shop opening.
Mayor of Kettering Margaret Talbot will tomorrow officially open Junior Choice in Market Street, Kettering, which was pedestrianised last year.
Joint-owner Rosi Greenall, who opened the first Junior Choice shop in Rushden six years ago, said: “We have always wanted to open a shop in our home town of Kettering and 12a Market Street presented the perfect opportunity to expand from our first shop in Rushden.
“With the recent improvement works and the number of independent shops located in the street, we feel this is the perfect time and place to open a second Junior Choice shoe shop.“
Only one shop unit now remains empty in the street after Mrs Greenall and husband Peter secured a long-term lease on the property from owners Kettering Council.
The area is proving popular with children’s shops in particular. Babies’ and children’s clothing and accessories store Honey Kitten opened in Market Street last February, The Dolls House Store opened in Market Street Mews last June and traditional toy shop Masters and Matthews opened there in December 2010.
Junior Choice, which stocks girls’ shoes up to adult size seven and boys’ up to size 9, opened its doors to the public on Wednesday.
The pedestrianisation of the street, carried out with EU funding, was finished last October after 10 months of work.
Paul Thomas, the council officer who has planned much of the redevelopment of Kettering town centre, said: “We are pleased to welcome retailer Junior Choice to Market Street.
“Following the improvement works we undertook on this area last year, the look and feel of Market Street and Sheep Street is proving to be attractive to businesses and shoppers alike.
“If you have not visited Market Street recently why not have a wander and discover some high-quality independent shops?”
The shop is open from 9.30am to 5pm.
