Oil man helping to ensure bees thrive

FARRINGTON Oils is to appear on a BBC 2 show which will look at ways to halt the decline in pollinating insects.

Film crews for Bees, Butterflies and Blooms visited the firm’s base at Bottom Farm, Hargrave, to film part of the three-part documentary.

Duncan Farrington, of Farrington Oils, says he is constantly looking for innovative ideas to encourage wildlife on to the farm because pollinating insects are vital to the production of many foods.

Mr Farrington has looked at sowing modern perennial wildflower ‘margins’ around crops on his farm to support pollinating insects and to benefit his crop productivity.

He said: “I am very proud to have been involved in this exciting programme looking at how we can take simple measures to try and reverse some of the declines in our native bumblebees and other pollinating insects on our farmland.

“With the help and advice of organisations such as Linking Environment And Farming we have been carrying out a number of habitat enhancement ideas on our family farm over the past 10 years or more.”

Farrington Oils’ flagship product is its Mellow Yellow cold-pressed rapeseed oil and it has created further products using the oil as a base, including a balsamic dressing and a classic vinaigrette.

Its products are sold by Harvey Nichols, Waitrose, Ocado and in some Sainsbury’s stores.

Farrington Oils will feature in the first episode of Bees, Butterflies and Birds, which will be presented by writer, broadcaster and gardener Sarah Raven. The first episode will be screened on Wednesday at 8pm.
