Nominate unsung hero for town’s top award

THE search has begun to find a community hero who has made a difference to their town in the past 12 months.

Rushden Mayor Cllr Janet Pinnock has launched the 2012 Rushden Mayor’s Awards for Services to the Community in 2011-12 and is appealing for people to come forward with who they think is deserving of an award this year.

The awards are the town’s highest accolade and have been going for several years to honour the town’s unsung heroes such as caring neighbours, volunteers and people who have gone above and beyond to make Rushden a better place to live.

Cllr Pinnock said: “The award is given by the mayor to anyone in the community who has given service to organisations or individuals.

“The type of people that do this work don’t expect any recognition so this is one way the town can honour their contribution.

“During my year as mayor I’ve met many dedicated volunteers so I would urge people to nominate people they feel are worthy of the award.”

Last year’s winners were Terry and Christine Masters who set up the Eclipse gymnastics club at the Pemberton Centre, Rushden Historical Transport Society chairman John Sugars and Tony Helsdown for his contribution to the town council and a variety of other organisations. Other previous winners include Peggy Ellison for caring for a friend, Peter Baker for helping people in the community, Karl Pentelow for organising a skateboard festival, Anna Allen and Brenda Cooper for their involvement in guiding, Kay Collins for helping to preserve the town’s history, Ivy Gould for helping a variety of organisations and Nigel Ainge and his mum Elsie for running groups for disabled people.

To nominate someone send a letter explaining why you have put them forward for the award to Town Clerk at Rushden Town Council, Rushden Hall, Hall Park, Rushden, NN10 9NG, by March 23, including your contact details and the nominees’ names and addresses.
