Mothers protest breast is the best
COUNTY mothers took to the streets to march in a protest to help save crucial breastfeeding services.
Scores of parents marched through Northampton town centre yesterday afternoon against the proposed closure of the Mum-to-mum Peer Supporters group at Kettering General Hospital, as well as the Northampton Baby Cafe breastfeeding service.
The group of protesters have already amassed more than 1,000 signatures against the closures.
NHS Northamptonshire is proposing to axe the Kettering service in April.
One of the protest organisers, Kim Watts, said: “It was an incredible turn-out and it was much better than expected.
“It was not just mums – grandparents, children and dads all came out.
“Having so many people out here shows the strength of feeling and how important these services are to a lot of people.”
The group of marchers met outside Roobarb and Kustard in Wellington Street at 1pm, and proceeded to walk peacefully through the town centre to County Hall.
NHS Northamptonshire has said it will not renew the Kettering group, whose 60 volunteers are trained to help mums breastfeed their babies.
Kim said many shoppers took an interest in the protest and hopes the raised awareness helps their cause.
She added: “I’m expecting my second child, and I breastfed my first without problems.
“But it could be different second time around.
“That’s why its important to have services like these for new mothers.”
