A young cancer patient is undergoing yet more chemotherapy as his family try to raise thousands of pounds to send him to Germany for treatment.

Zac Knighton-Smith, seven, of Rushden, started his relapse chemotherapy for acute neuroblastoma last week in Leicester following his latest round of surgery which took place in Germany at the beginning of January.

His family needs to raise £30,000 by February 20 to send him back to Germany for a month of follow-up treatment which will cleanse Zac’s body from the remnants of the chemotherapy and build up his immune system.

His grandmother June Knighton said: “The relapse chemotherapy will hopefully make sure the cancer doesn’t come back while he’s waiting to go back to Germany for follow-up treatment at a specialist cancer clinic.

“He’s doing really well and has been able to go back to school for a little bit, which is wonderful because he’s had to miss out on so much schooling and misses his friends.

“His teachers are pleased with his progress and he’s doing well with his reading and his sums.”

As well as caring for Zac, his family have been organising fundraisers and have been touched by the support they have received from the community.

Mrs Knighton said: “The fundraising is going steadily and we’ve received £400 just in donations from individuals, many of whom have been following Zac’s progress in the Evening Telegraph. We know money is tight for everyone and we can’t thank everyone enough.”

Among those backing Zac are members of the Kettering Loyalty Card scheme who have organised an online charity auction which finishes tomorrow.

It includes a hot-air balloon flight for two, lunch for two at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant at Claridges and vouchers for a variety of businesses in Kettering, including hairdressers, restaurants and garages.
