Families have thanked kind Evening Telegraph readers for saving their Christmas following our gift appeal.

Social workers who distributed the mountain of gifts donated to the Evening Telegraph and Connect FM Appeal have described the joy of children in deprived families who would otherwise have had nothing.

Jeanette Walsh, who arranges for the gifts to be delivered, said: “I have done this for years but each time I’m touched by the feedback. It’s just fantastic. They are genuinely grateful for everything that’s given to them.”

Social workers from the four children in need teams in Kettering, two in Corby and four in Wellingborough handed out the presents to families they know needed them most in the week before Christmas.

One recounted a family that lost its father the Saturday before Christmas breaking down in tears at readers’ generosity.

The children ran around “screaming with glee” when they were given donated books.

A mother who was too depressed to shop for her children after delivering a still born children the week before Christmas also thanked readers for their kindness.

And a mother who had been unable to buy gifts for her four children because she was in hospital said: “You have saved Christmas.”

Teddy bears donated through a promotion at Matalan in Corby meant all 60 children who attended a holiday club at the William Knibb Centre, Kettering, could receive one on their last day.
