The turf has been cut to start work on a new £4.3m school which will eventually cater for 210 children.

Work officially started on Little Stanion’s new primary school and nursery yesterday. It has been funded by Northamptonshire County Council and contributions from developers in the village.

It was originally due to open in 2009 but the project slipped due to the economic downturn.

The school will now take its first children in September 2012.

The first year’s intake will be 30 reception pupils, 15 Year 1 pupils and 15 Year 2 pupils.

Eventually it will house 210 pupils aged four to 11, with a 26-place nursery unit.

A governing body has been established and the process of recruiting staff has started.

Mother-of-two and Little Stanion resident Anna Myskow is the co-chairman of the board of governors.

Her children Harvey, four, and Grace, six, will go to the school when it opens.

She said: “One of the reasons we moved here was for the children to go to a village school.

“They are at Exeter Primary School now, which is fantastic but is a good drive from here.

“I got involved when they sent out letters to residents, and I applied because I have children and I was interested in the project.

“With my co-chair Jayne Orton we are organising the appointment of a head, then we will be getting the school up and running.

“It is nice to be involved and it is nice to see something happening now.”

County council cabinet member for children and young people Cllr Andrew Grant said: “The school was down to open in 2009 but due to the downturn, it is going to be six years from when planning permission was granted to it happening.

“But we now know the groundwork is done and the team is on site to develop a first-class school for the community.”

The new school is being built by contractor Heron Brothers.

It was the last Northamptonshire school to be approved under old legislation, meaning it will still be local authority controlled.

The running of all new schools is now put out to competition.
