A toy shop which aims to take people back to their childhoods is set to open its doors in Wellingborough.

Paul Warner has been running his store ‘When I Was A Kid’ online for six years and is now opening a store at Nene Court, off The Embankment.

Mr Warner has been busy going to great lengths to research what people want from a toy shop, including bringing in mothers who blog online to ask their views.

He also asked people on social networking website Twitter what their favourite toy shops were and visited the stores for inspiration.

Mr Warner picked up a number of ideas which he has worked into his store, which will open on Friday. It will sell toys from various eras so anyone who goes in will find something which takes them back to their youth.

Mr Warner said: “When I Was A Kid is relative to when you grew up. We have got things like metal jacks which pre-date the Second World War, it’s a really old game. Then we have got things like kaleidoscopes and jack in the boxes, as well as slightly more modern stuff.

“Everything we do is either wooden or does not have batteries.”

Mr Warner said he wanted his store to wow shoppers.

Special touches he has made to the shop include a counter themed as a castle, with turrets and a draw bridge, which also features a lower section where children can pay for their toys themselves.

Other special touches include a tin pedal car suspended from the ceiling and a themed play area to keep children amused.

Mr Warner said he wanted to dispel the idea that wooden toys were expensive.
