Animal Welfare is our first priority
With reference to your correspondent Mrs H Bowles (Your Say, April 29).
Firstly, we did not ask for 440,000 for our sanctuary; we received 290,000 from a benefactor's estate, the charity put up over 50,000 and my partner Annette sold her house and the proceeds went into the charity to cover the shortfall.
The RSPCA brings animals to us and we have told them they can come at any time without notice because the welfare of the animals comes first.
A few weeks ago the Evening Telegraph published letters saying we should take the stray dogs, but the people who wrote in were the same people who a few months ago were writing saying we should not be building new facilities while we had outstanding bills.
A few months earlier they were complaining about giving a donation to come to our open day.
In fact, since the new law over stray dogs came in, it is local councils who are solely responsible for them. When the dog wardens are not working the local authorities have a responsibility to create "acceptance points". We take stray dogs after they have completed their seven-day statutory period.
To the individuals who keep complaining about Animals in Need/Maxicare dog rehoming, get your facts right before you start writing such garbage. We would like to thank the majority for their constant support.
At present we have over 50 dogs, 30 cats, 40 rabbits and 30 rats along with many other animals waiting for homes, so we will always be appealing for funding to help with food and vet bills.
Since we have set up the sanctuary at Pine Tree Farm we have rehomed over 50 dogs, 200 cats, 100 rabbits and numerous other small animals.
