Legion branch wins poppy power award

The Wellingborough Royal British Legion has received an award for being the most improved county branch during the Poppy Appeal for the second year in a row.
The Albert Franklin Memorial Cup was awarded to the branch after it raised more than £32,000 for the Poppy Appeal in 2010-11.
The branch smashed the previous year’s total of £24,500, making it the most improved collection figure of any branch in Northamptonshire.
Branch vice chairman Laura Martin said: “We would really like to say a big thank you to the people of Wellingborough for their generosity. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers because without them we wouldn’t be able to raise a penny. This is the third year in a row that we have made a significant improvement.”
Branch chairman John Holloway said: “I am surprised and pleased that we have won the cup again. Too many people thought the Royal British Legion in this town had shut down, but we now have an active committee and an active Royal British Legion.
“The money we raise is important because we support servicemen and women, and their families. And we give money to Help for Heroes.”
Branch secretary Denise Barnett, said: “The need for money is growing because every day there are soldiers coming home from war zones injured.
“We also support those who are getting older and might need more help now, and the families of servicemen who served in the war and have died.”
Branch members are already busy fundraising for the next appeal.
They are organising a series of events, including a dance.
