Kathleen Mears celebrated her 100th birthday in style on Saturday.

Mrs Mears spent the day with her husband Robert, 95, their daughter Kathleen, son-in-law David, friends and had a special visit from Corby Mayor Cllr Gail McDade.

The couple, who have been married for 72 years, are very independent and Mrs Mears, nee Mulley, reads a broadsheet newspaper and completes several crosswords every day.

They met when Kathleen, who is originally from London, visited Rockingham Castle where Robert worked as a gardener. They have spent all their married life in Corby.

Their daughter Kathleen said: “Many people at their age are in a residential home but my parents still live at home and have hardly any help, although they have good neighbours.”
