Heartwarming hound tale
Oakway Children's Centre. At Oakway Infants School Oakway, wellingborough. Reading dogs Batman (black) and Danny encouraging children to read. Tony Nevett, 7 year old Zechariah Taylor and Danny the dog.
I am writing to thank you for “Top award for reading dog Danny”, October 21, 2011, one of the most heartwarming articles I have read in many moons.
Congratulations to Tony Nevett for his commitment to greyhounds and for initiating the Reading Education Assistance Dogs programme in the UK, and to the International Fund for Animal Welfare for honouring greyhound Danny.
Kudos to Danny, who is a shining example of a greyhound realising the full potential of this amazing breed.
With an inhumane existence behind him, Danny, in that quiet, unassuming greyhound manner, touches children in a pivotal way. He exemplifies that greyhounds are excellent ambassadors for themselves and are wonderful companions, whether as a listening dog, therapy dog, or simply at home on the sofa.
The public has become increasingly aware of the cruelty inherent in the greyhound racing industry.
We cannot fathom abandoning puppies. We would not subject our dogs to abysmal confinement, day in and day out, or cause them to risk injury and death running around an oval just so people can bet on them. We cannot imagine valuing our dogs only if they are generating a profit.
I have personally adopted beloved ex-racing greyhounds since 1997, and I am a board member of GREY2K USA, a national non-profit organisation that works to end the cruelty of greyhound racing. For more information, please visit www.grey2kusa.org.

Friday, October 28, 2011 at 04:41 PMIt is wonderful to see these gentle greyhounds being appreciated for their true nature. I take my 3 greyhounds to visit my Mother in her nursing home and when we go into the lounge all the residents are so pleased to meet them, stroke them and talk of their memories of dogs they loved in their past. Danny was rescued by Cork Dawgs in Ireland. He, along with many other greyhounds in the UK, had been abandoned by their owners and trainers because they either didn't make the grade or become too injured from racing or too slow. Many saplings are injured during trialling. The Greyhound Board of Great Britain sanctions the killing of greyhounds for their registered trainers, if: No home or placement can be found OR, If a greyhound's injury is not financially viable to have treated. (GBGB website - Retirement Form, Section D. British tracks fuelled the breeding of about 16,140 greyhounds in 2010. The total homing figure (greyhounds homed through the Retired Greyhound Trust and independently) for the same year is thought to be in the region of 7,200. The figures for 2009 are l7,140 and 7,730. This adds up to 18,350 greyhounds in 2yrs that have disappeared, presumed killed. If you are interested in further information, have a look at Greyhound Watch which is an excellent website. Please do not go to greyhound tracks or bet on the dogs so that this absuive and cruel industry continues to fade away.
