Groups which have been working hard to help improve their local area were honoured for their efforts at an awards ceremony.

The winners of the Northamptonshire Environmental Forum’s annual Improving Your Patch awards were announced on Saturday at the Umbrella Fair at the Racecourse in Northampton.

The aim of the awards is to raise awareness of action which is being taken throughout the county to improve residents’ quality of life to get people thinking about what they can do to improve the area they live in.

The overall county award winner was the Oundle Transition Town Group. The group was presented with a wooden plaque, a certificate and a cheque for £400.

Other award winners included Adrenaline Alley in Corby, Glapthorn Allotments and Gardening Association, KCU Ltd and Keystone Escape in Kettering.

The winners of the prizes for each area were Adrenaline Alley for Corby, the Oundle Transition Town Group for East Northamptonshire and KCU Ltd for Kettering.

Each group received a certificate and a £150 cheque.

Northamptonshire Environmental Forum chairman Hugh Fenton said: “I congratulate all the winners – every community that is improving its patch is a winner.

“The entries were again very diverse – all are different, all show ways in which different communities are working to improve the quality of life in Northamptonshire and came from all over the county.”

KCU Ltd co-ordinator Gill Correa said they were thrilled to receive the Kettering area award.

She said: “Three of us went over on Saturday to the Umbrella Fair as we had been told we had won something but didn’t know what. There were a lot of worthwhile projects, there were all sorts of projects represented there.

“It was quite humbling to win. There are a lot of great things that happen in Northamptonshire and we don’t always celebrate our successes well enough.

“We have a lot of volunteers, we rely on them for a lot of the work we do, and it’s recognition for them.

“We were given a certificate that will go up in our charity shop in Gold Street in Kettering so everyone there and the customers will see it.”
