First woman head in school’s history

HISTORY has been made at a Corby school with the appointment of Louise Blair as the new headteacher.

She is the first woman to take the helm at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School since it opened in 1966.

Mrs Blair, 31, said: “I’m extremely honoured to have been appointed the school’s first female headteacher. It’s a privilege and I’m so excited about meeting the challenge.”

Mrs Blair, who was a pupil at St Brendan’s Primary School and Our Lady and Pope John School, in the town, began her teaching career at St Patrick’s in 2003.

She was later promoted to deputy headteacher and took up her present post at the beginning of last month.

Last night, Monsignor Kevin McGinell, Episcopal Vicar for Education for the Northampton diocese, led a special mass at the school when Mrs Blair was inducted as headteacher and presented with gifts. It was attended by pupils, parents, governors, members of the clergy and parishioners.

Mrs Blair, who lives on the Oakley Vale estate, said: “Because I have been at the school for a number of years, the transition has been easy. I am Corby born and bred and I know many of our pupils’ families. St Patrick’s is a wonderful school, with a great staff team, marvellous parents and governors and pupils who are a credit to their families and who we are really proud of.”

Mrs Blair said her main aims were to keep the school’s 251 pupils happy and safe, continue improving attainment levels and to strengthen links with the community and St Patrick’s Church, in Gainsborough Road. She said: “I’m delighted with my new job.”
