Bid to improve town’s streets

A RANGE of modern new street furniture items could replace benches, bins and signs in Market Street, Wellingborough.

A total of £75,000 has been set aside to be spent on the new contemporary-style street furniture, which includes wooden and metal benches, stainless steel litter bins, bollards, cycle stands, sign posts and street name plates.

Wellingborough Council’s development committee is set to discuss several options on Tuesday.

The first is to have the proposed new contemporary street furniture and to install a total of 13 benches and six bins. The second is another arrangement of the contemporary street furniture with 11 benches and five bins.

The third option is to move the existing traditional-style street furniture around and to remove bollards on Orient Place. This option would cut the cost of the project to £30,000.

A recommendation on which option to choose will be presented to the development committee in May, along with people’s views.

Cllr Graham Lawman, chairman of the development committee, said the council was not conducting a formal public consultation but was keen to hear people’s thoughts and ideas. He said: “We are looking for any ideas people have about what they want to see – do they want more benches or less benches, more cycle racks or less.”

He said the idea with the contemporary-style street furniture was to link together areas where work has been done on the road – Sheep Street, Silver Street and part of Market Street – with the section of Market Street which runs between them. The new contemporary-style street furniture has already been installed in the areas where work has been done.

Carol Atter, of Windsor Road, Wellingborough, said she thought the existing street furniture was good enough. She said: “Why can’t they just clean it up?”

I would rather see the existing street furniture retained. I would be disturbed to see functioning items being upgraded at public expense and the current ones being discarded. The County Council urge us to ReUse and Recycle and Reduce landfill. If the benches and bins are in the wrong place then they can be moved. Money spent not 'linking up' styles of street furniture could instead be spent employing two local people at the average wage for a year, or more in job shares. Please don't throw them away. I suggest the Development Committee think of ways to tidy the Town centre up-just take a look at the pavements along Sheep st, silver St and Market st at the recently laid beige slabs-absolutely filthy where people walk-you can see the contrast from the part next to the buildings where feet don't walk. Has anyone seen the hundreds of chewing gum deposits around the "cafe" type area by Rafferty's bar? So evident during the day when the tables aren't out. And have a walk around the grassed area between Morrisons car park and Croyland Abbey-discarded beer cans, food wrappers etc. We don't want fancy street furniture-just clean up the town to attract new retailers.

Have to also agree with Victor and Aliss - I remember when we had a busy, interesting market in Wellingborough. The market these days is frankly, a joke.

There's nothing wrong with the current "furniture" - I completely agree with Victor Stirling - we'd rather see a variety of shops and a busy market.

Another dumb proposal from the inept council. Martket town centers up and down the country are dying and what do the council want to do? Why spend money on vanity projects of course. Cllr Graham Lawman, as usual: “We are looking for any ideas people have about what they want to see – do they want more benches or less benches, more cycle racks or less.” I bet people would much rather see a variety of shops and a market bristling with trade instead of the lacklustre choice the town currently has!
