Bar’s licence is changed after police concerns
THE conditions of the licence for a town centre bar in Wellingborough have been changed after police raised concerns following violent incidents there.
Wellingborough Council’s licensing sub-committee enforced changes to the licence of Baileys in Cambridge Street at a meeting yesterday.
Police called for the licence to be reviewed after four incidents which took place last year.
These included an assault on August 27 when a glass bottle was used as a weapon and the victim suffered a chipped tooth and cut lip, and a large fight involving about 20 people on September 3.
Police said there was another assault in the pub’s garden at 10pm on September 29 and on October 21 a man was followed out of the pub and assaulted.
Officers also raised concerns about the pub’s designated premises supervisor at the time and called for her to be removed from the role.
Simon Collinson, managing director of Oak Taverns, which owns Baileys, told the committee the previous licensee had been removed last year and that she had been replaced by Danny Fredericks, who has many years of experience in Wellingborough’s pub trade.
Under the new conditions of the licence, the bar must now be fitted with an improved CCTV system, be supervised by door staff after 9pm on Saturdays and any other night when a disco or entertainment is on at the bar, and only use plastic glasses on evenings when the bar is open after midnight.
Chairman of the sub-committee Cllr Peter Morrall said the changes were being enforced on the grounds of public safety.
