Nationwide's mortgage processing centre in Northampton is safe after the company revealed plans to close five of its centres.
Staff at the centres are being informed of the move today, and will then begin a 30-day consultation period. The centres at risk are Belfast, Rayleigh, Sevenoaks, Southampton and Swansea.

Intermediaries will be advised in due course which centre they should instead send their applications to. The unaffected centres are in Northampton, Birmingham, Chester, Doncaster, Glasgow and Newcastle.

Matthew Wyles, group executive director of non-retail at Nationwide, added it was an established fact that larger processing centres are more efficient and more capable of delivering a consistently high level of service.

He added: "Small units are more susceptible to peaks and troughs in activity."
