Trading standards officers at Northamptonshire County Council have received a number of complaints from local businesses who have been sent a remittance advice from a company calling itself Tribune Publishing.
The remittance advice claims to be fo
r an entry in a classified business and fax directory, but no information is provided as to when, where or how many of these directories will be published despite companies being asked to stump up a payment of £521.
The address attributed to Tribune Publishing is a mail forwarding office in Islington, London, and currently there is no information as to where the mail is being forwarded to from there.
Similarly, businesses should be on the lookout for forms being sent out by a company called European City Guide asking for confirmation of business details. Although no payment is required at first, any business returning the form will eventually be billed for 987 Euro (£790).
Businesses are advised to check whether they have received any such communication.
Councillor Liz Tavener, cabinet member for community safety, said: "Anyone who thinks they may have made a payment to Tribune Publishing or who needs advice is asked to contact trading standards by calling Consumer Direct on 08454 040506."
