One of the major elements to improve the area between Bridge Street and Carlsberg brewery is scrapping the current one-way system around the Plough Hotel.
It is hoped the move would make the area around the former St John's Church more pedestrian
friendly and help traffic get in and out of town more easily.
Businessman Colin Richardson, who owns St John's Church, which is now a restaurant, said: "What I want to see is people coming back into the town centre again, because the people from the county avoid it like the plague at the moment.
"So the fact they've got together and come up with some sort of action plan is great.
"And it's nice to see the church building at the heart of it. It's a grade one listed building which is a treasure for the town."
He was backed by Bob Hardman, the manager of the Plough Hotel, which currently sits at the centre of the one-way system.
He said: "It would be a really good idea to change the roads. During the night time it's just used as a race track at the moment. It's also nice to see they want to put some more shops down this end of town too, I think that would really help."
The one-way system was also labelled "a nonsense" by WNDC chief executive Mike Hayes.
He said: "It clearly has to be sorted out. The church is a wonderful building, but at the moment it sits in the middle of that one-way system, surrounded by traffic."
