Five-a-side football pitch operator Goals Soccer Centres said competitive pricing helped it weather the consumer downturn as it unveiled a 20% rise in first half profits.
The firm, which is due to open a new centre in Northampton in November, reported pre-tax profits of £3.7m for the six months to June 30.

Like-for-like sales were up 4% during the period, with average entry charges at £5.50 per player at its 29 UK sites.

Chairman Sir Rodney Walker said: "Our low admission price means that the business is resilient to any wider consumer spending downturn."

East Kilbride-based Goals' total sales were up 18% to £11.4m thanks mainly to the opening of four new centres at Tolworth in London, Bristol South, Bristol North and Stoke.

The firm is planning to roll out at least six new five-a-side sites next year to capitalise on the sport's growing popularity, with the rate of openings increasing in 2010 and beyond.

Managing director Keith Rogers said: "This is an outstanding performance, demonstrating the continued demand in the market for our 'next generation' concept.

"There remains great opportunities and significant potential to continue to expand our business and to deliver growing returns for shareholders."
