MORE than 1000 young footballers got together for a weekend of matches in the sun.
A total of 117 football teams from across the county met to take part un the Weekley Rovers Tournament 2008 held at the Weekley Glebe in Kettering.

The children played across six different pitches and when not in action they had the chance to enjoy a bouncy castle slide, fun games and refreshments.

Parent and 11-a-side organiser Kate Fairbairn said: "We had a great couple of days and saw some very good football.

"We also had a lot of good feedback from parents who agreed what a well-organised tournament it was.

"It takes us six months to organise so it is fantastic when it all goes smoothly. The fact that the weather was brilliant really made the day.

"I think it is really good for children to get involved in football at an event like this because the focus is on fun.

"All the children in the under-7 and under-8 catagories get a medal."

The event saw some excellent football skills on display with parents proudly cheering on their children as they went for the ball.

Manager of the Hurricanes under-7s Paul Barker said: "My son Harry played and he had a great time.

"We got some great goals. But I think it would be unfair to single out any one child for praise. The whole team did fantastically and they were a credit to themselves and their parents.

"I saw lots of examples of the boys sticking to the rules of fair play, which is part of the discipline of football, and is nice to see at their age.

"This tournament is great because the boys get to meet such a variety of teams."
