Reading Roger Helmer MEP's letter about the hunting demo at Westminster, I was beginning to think I had seen a different demo until I realised he had been in Strasbourg at the time.
His views would have held more credence if he had at least witnessed the events he pontificated about.
I saw orange smoke drifting up from a corner of the crowd, panicking members of the public.
I saw missiles being thrown at watching police officers.
I heard obscene, amplified language from the guest speakers addressing the throng.
I heard platform speakers threatening MPs with violence.
I saw "peaceful country folk" wearing obscene badges and venting their fury at police officers silently manning barriers.
I saw a smoke bomb thrown out of the crowd towards police horses. The same bomb landed at the feet of the woman in a wheelchair who I was accompanying, instantly covering us in obnoxious fumes that made us choke and our eyes water.
I saw protesters block the road at Westminster Bridge, holding up the taxi my disabled friend had booked to take her home. She waited almost three hours.
Even the coach, proudly emblazoned with 'On hire to Harrods', which had come to pick up demonstrators was denied entry, to the disgust of the driver.
I saw bus passengers pleading with demonstrators to let them pass as they were late for work, late for home, late for worried parents.
For the purpose of this letter I make no judgements on the above. I simply state what I saw and what I heard . . . what I witnessed.
